Well, really short hair looks cute on girls who have petite facial features and good solid bone structure (like Winona Rider or Halle Barre). People with really rounded features, larger faces or round/ square faces don't look good with really short hair (like Michelle Williams or Renee Zellwiger). If you have a rather feminine style then you might have to girl it up a little more to keep the short hair looking feminine. There's this haircut I think looks really nice and it's someone on a British soap called 'hollyoaks' called Nancy that has it and it would be a bit of a compramise maybe?

It's kind of longish at one side but it slopes up and ends up really short at the other side.

thats the only pic i can get but if you search on google or something you might find a better one but it's really nice in real life. You'll maybe find an episode on youtube or something to see it better.
